Karva Chauth: Fast for longevity of husband's long life

Monday, October 29, 2012 | 1:31:00 AM

Karva Chauth is a one day festival celebrated by Hindus and Sikh ladies. Karva is another word for diya and chauth means fourth in Hindi. The ignition of diya is the symbol of life and fourth corresponds to the day of observance. It is the fourth day of krishna paksh, of the month of Kartik. This is very popular in north India.

On the day of Karva Chauth married women fast from sunrise to moonrise for the safety and longevity of their husbands. It's one of the obligations of the Hindu festival of Karwa Chauth. It is also observed that married ladies also fast for their fiancés or desired husbands. The festival also coincides with the wheat-sowing time. Women observe the fast to pray for the safety of their husbands at this time as they ventured away from home.

On Karva Chauth, women awake to eat and drink just before sunrise. The fast begins with dawn. Fasting women do not eat during the day, and some additionally do not drink any water either. It is not easy to fast for twenty four hours. It requires willpower. Women apply henna and other cosmetics to themselves. In the evening women dress in fine clothing, wear jewellery and apply henna on their palms and hands. Most number of women wear Saris of Red colour.

In the evening when the moon is visible they see the reflection of their husbands face in a vessel filled with water or through a sieve or through the cloth of a dupatta.

The husband now takes the water from the thali and gives his wife her first sip and feeds her with sweets. This breaks the fast. It is a custom that the husband should gift his wife with jewellery or a new dress.

Karva Chauth is a symbol of love between a husband and wife. It is believed that if a woman faithfully observes Karwa Chauth, she secures her husband's future. Parents often send gifts to their married daughters and their children.
